As we all know, the resume and the cover letter are used for the job application. I think most students will have questions about How to write the resume and the cover letter? In order to receive the opportunity for the interview, applicants must pass the evaluation of the resume.

In addition, many companies today accept the resume via the internet and it turns out that the evaluation of the curriculum vitae will be determined by the system instead of being reviewed by humans. The disadvantage is that you may lose some potential candidates. Apart from the resume, it is important to deliver the cover letter, but many people forget it or some do not know what the cover letter is. Next, E-Canada School provides advice for writing the resume and the cover letter.

Resume (Curriculum Vitae, CV)

This is a document used to present personal background, skills, achievements, education and work experiences. It is usually used to get a job. However, perhaps not everyone knows the format of writing the CV. Here we will present the basics, first the CV must include information from the academic, work related experiences and skills. It is generally classified into two classes, the first is chronological and the other is functional. Each person's situation varies from person to person. We can observe the two samples of the CV in the following:

Curriculum vitae chronologically

Curriculum Vitae Functionally

After the comparison, we found that the titles used in the CV are the same as: personal information header that includes the candidate's name, telephone numbers, address and email. Below is the objective that indicates the desired job position and the goal you want to achieve. In the part of the academic include school name, specialty, year of graduation, list some related courses. Not only academy information, but experiences are also important. These are the similar of these two CVs.

The difference between the chronological CV and the functional CV are the following:

Chronological CV follows the order to first write the work experiences and then mention the related skills. On the other hand, CV of functional is the opposite, first write the related skills continues with work experiences.

Chronological CV is used when one has more work experiences while functional CV is based on skills. For this reason, functional CV is more suitable for the recent graduate, those who have an empty time in the term of the employee, and for those who want to change the career.

Apart from this information, students can also mention the voluntary activities they have participated, awards and honors they have won in the past.

Those who should take care when writing the CV are: format such as the size of the letters, organized, clear and consistent. Use the titles to organize the information and separate the topics as the images shown. For example, education, experience, skills, among others. In the end, they must remember the keywords. That is, try to include the words that match the job description published because the internet system searches for CVs that have the same or similar words as the job description. For example, if a job requires candidates to have excellent communication skills, the system will look for the CVs that this word has from the applications.

Cover Letter

The cover letter is a one-page document that is sent with the CV when you apply for the job. It is a letter that explains why you are the right candidate for this job along with your skill and professional knowledge. It also indicates the values it provides to the company. The cover letter serves as an introduction, draw attention and express the interest of work and company. Apart from that, the letter can also be used to clarify the controversy in the history of work.

Generally, the cover letter is only one page formatted, is used correctly and does not contain grammatical or spelling errors. It is divided into three paragraphs that are the introduction, body and conclusion. The contents include but not limited to the following: confirmation of the job position, explanation of why you choose this company and not the other with the reason of hiring you. Don't forget to mention your past achievement or other relevant skills. In the end, you must include the contact information.

Errors to avoid such as:

  • Company name and incorrect information

  • They do not match the necessary job skills

  • Clichés, copy exactly as the cover letter samples

  • Grammatical or spelling mistakes

Check again after writing. Some internet applications do not require you to upload the cover letter, but it is recommended to try to upload if you can because it is a way to increase your impression. See the following sample of the cover letter.

Each University will have a career center that teach students about job search and interview skills. Students are advised to learn the details early.
