Renting is a problem that every international student will face in addition to studying, especially for college students. College students can choose to live on or off campus. Of course, no matter where you live, there are advantages and disadvantages.

For example, some people may feel that they can meet more friends on campus, and they are closer to the class, so they don't need to worry about trivial matters. Some people think that living outside the school can have more private space, living expenses are cheaper, and adapt to the adult's life early. The following explains the advantages, disadvantages, and related costs of living on and off campus.

Live on campus

Canadian university accommodation is generally charged by the academic year, 8 months a year, and then the school plan (meal plan) refers to the cost of meals in the school, which is mandatory for students to buy, as with accommodation is 8 months .

In addition, the campus also has a variety of public equipment, such as gyms, swimming pools, libraries, etc. This is undoubtedly a life experience for first-year students. Students can also use the opportunity at school to meet more friends and join some interested communities.

Benefits of living on campus:

• All costs are included (water grid), students do not have to worry about paying utility bills every month.

• Get closer to classrooms and other amenities to save on transportation costs.

• Mandatory campus package fees save students time by not having to buy a lot of food. There are a variety of foods in college to meet the needs of students. In most universities, food bought at school through the campus package is tax-free.

• Even if students leave the campus, they can still use the balance remaining in the campus package.

• Equipped with basic amenities such as beds and desks. Rentals in North America are generally unfurnished.

The disadvantages of living on campus:

• Accommodation costs are fairly rigid and students do not have the flexibility to save space.

• The cost of a campus package may exceed what students usually spend on meals.

• Mandatory campus packages are not necessarily transferable or refundable, and costs that have not been used up at the end of the school year may be lost.

• Narrow living space.

Live off campus

Generally, students will rent together with a few good classmates to save costs. The rent is written according to the contract, usually 12 months. The landlord will ask the student to pay two months' rent. There are four different types of houses in Canada. They are:

(1) Independent houses (houses) are generally two-story with three or four rooms, a living room, two bathrooms, and a place for parking.

(2) Townhouse, a type of detached house, but it is generally a three-story three-room house with rooms on the second and third floors. The living room is on the ground floor and parking. Townhouses have another feature. They are connected together, so they don't have a back garden like a detached house.

(3) There are two types of apartments, namely apartment and condo. The difference between them is that the apartment is relatively old, and the laundry needs to go to the outside laundry room, while condo is a relatively new apartment, with a gym and some conference rooms for activities, and there is no need to take the laundry outside.

Benefits of living off campus:

• You can save money by buying food and cooking.

• Can share with roommates to reduce costs.

• Housing space outside the school will be larger.

• Many of them are new or have been built for a long time, so they will be newer than the dormitories on campus.

The disadvantages of living off campus:

• There are additional hydro grid costs.

• Need to buy furniture yourself (table, chair, bed, kitchenware, etc.).

• There may be no security to secure the accommodation.

• In addition to tuition fees, additional transportation fees may apply.

In addition to the advantages and disadvantages above, I believe most people want to know the cost of housing. For example, a student studying at the University of Toronto's main campus (located in the center of Toronto) will spend one academic year (8 months) on campus. On-campus package fees range between CAD 12,800 and CAD 15,000.

Renting off-campus ancestors includes: water grid and meals between CAD 20,000 and CAD 22,000.

The reasons are:

(A) Canadian houses are up a lot compared to five years ago.

(2) More and more international students are beginning to prefer to live off campus.

(3) The price of the rent is found near the school. If students are willing to live farther away from the school, they may find relatively cheap rent.

This is a comparison of renting and living with the main campus of Laurier University, which is located in Waterloo. Because it is in a small city, the cost is not as high as living in downtown Toronto. Rental prices range from CAD 6424 to CAD 9400.

Although renting a house in Canada is not cheap, it is still cheaper for other big cities. The chart below shows monthly rents in major cities.

In the more well-known study abroad countries: Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, it can be seen from the chart that housing prices in New York City are twice that of Toronto, and the city rents of the top universities in the United States are more expensive than Toronto. In terms of the quality of education, studying in Toronto is more cost-effective.
