Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed Marco Mendicino as Canada ’s next Minister of Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship (IRCC).

Mendicino is 46 years old and is a descendant of Italian immigrants to Canada. He was elected to the Eglinton-Lawrence MP and won 53% of the voters.

Mendicino has an extensive legal background and has served as a federal prosecutor for nearly 10 years. Since entering Parliament in 2015, Mendicino has been the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities.

In 2017, he served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada.

Mendicino works at the Law Society of Upper Canada and serves as the President of the Association of Justice Counsel for two terms. This is a national association representing nearly 3,000 federal prosecutors and government lawyers employed by the Canadian government.

Mendicino will succeed Ahmed Hussen, who has led IRCC since 2017. Hussen will take over as Minister of Families Children and Social Development.

Let ’s review the Liberal Party ’s commitment to immigration policy during the Canadian federal election:

Global News (2019-10-16) reports: On September 30, the Liberal Party stated that they would introduce “permanent, dedicated refugee stream” for human rights advocates, journalists and humanitarian workers, with the goal of helping up to 250 people each year . They also guarantee that people who meet the requirements for obtaining citizenship applications will be provided free of charge. In addition, the Municipal Nominee Program was created to provide 5,000 permanent resident places, and the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP) will be made permanent, and 5,000 places will also be provided.

The Globe and Mail (2019-10-15) reports: Both welcome more migrants, including those who fled the Syrian civil war, and prevent asylum seekers from crossing the US-Canada border. The latest goal is to reach 350,000 immigrants by 2021, up from 310,000 in 2018, but the Liberal Party website says that the Liberal Party will "increase the number of immigrants in a moderate and responsible manner." Liberty also promised to work with the US government to "improve" the Safe Third Country Agreement, which included loopholes that led to a large number of cross-border people.
