There is a unique academic program in Canada, called the postgraduate certificate program or postgraduate diploma program. Although it contains the word " graduate", it is still different from the traditional Master Degree program. We will take you to analyze the difference between them and why the postgraduate certificate program is more popular than the Master program.

The difference between a postgraduate certificate program and a Master program:

1. Different education levels

Postgraduate certificate program are diploma courses rather than degree courses. The postgraduate diploma is a degree between undergraduate and master. After finishing the postgraduate certificate courses, the graduates get a certificate/diploma, which is what we usually call a certificate, but there is no degree. After finishing the Master courses, the graduates get a master’s degree.

2. Different length of study

The postgraduate certificate program is usually a one-year program, and the actual study time is usually 8 months, divided into two semesters, each completed in 4 months. The master program is usually a two-year program, but from the perspective of study time, it takes longer.

3. The length of work permit is different

According to Canada’s current work permit policy, if an international student only takes a one-year program, usually he/she can only get a one-year work permit in Canada after graduation, and he/she can not get a three-year work permit unless completing a program with minimum 18-months length. Therefore, after completing a postgraduate certificate program, you can usually only get a one-year work permit, and you can usually get a three-year work permit after completing a Master progrm.

4. Different entry requirements

A graduate degree usually requires a bachelor's degree to apply, while a postgraduate certificate program can be a junior college graduate or a bachelor's degree.

Reasons why postgraduate certificate programs are more popular than Master programs:

1. If students want to improve their academic qualifications after graduating from a bachelor degree, but threshold of applying for the regular master's degree courses is relatively high, and the students' academic performance is average, they can choose the postgraduate certificate programs. This can not only meet the improvement of academic qualifications, but also provide students with more opportunities for employment in Canada after graduation.

2. It can be used as a bonus for academic qualifications when applying for immigration. In the EE system, as long as one of the educational diploma is 3 years or more, and the other is 1 year or more, it can be regarded as a double degree. Therefore, the 1-year Post Graduate Certificate can be used as an independent academic qualification.

For example, if you have studied in Canada for a three-year college, you can continue to study a one-year postgraduate certificate program after graduation; or if you have completed a four-year undergraduate degree, after graduation, you can also choose to study one more year for postgraduate certificate program. In this way, you can get extra points in the EE system when you apply for immigration in the future.

In the EE system, the score of a double degree will be higher than the score of a single degree. Let's cite a few cases below to see the difference in the scores of dual education and single education under different circumstances.

Our default is for single applicants under the age of 30 who have worked in Canada for one year.

1. If you have completed a three-year college or four-year undergraduate degree in Canada, and got 6 in IELTS (each of the four items), the score in the EE system is only 394; if you read one more one-year postgraduate, your score in the EE system will increase To 426 points.

2. If the applicant has completed a three-year college or four-year undergraduate degree in Canada, and the IELTS is very high, reaching CLB9, that is, three 7,one 8 (listening), the score in the EE system is 462; if you take a one-year postgraduate certificate program, the score in the EE system will be as high as 482. According to the current EE system, you will definitely be invited, which is invincible.

3) In different situations, the scores for dual education and single education are also different. If you are interested, you can simulate and calculate your own scores or contact us for your free evaluation.

3. If you want to get a three-year work permit in addition to the postgraduate certificate program, you can choose to continue to enroll in another professional postgraduate certificate program after completing a one-year postgraduate certificate program, so that you will accumulate two years for the length of study time, and get a three-year work permit. ECanadaSchool reminds everyone: because the post-graduation work permit is allowed only once for application, so if you plan to study for another degree, you should not apply for a post-graduation work permit. After you have completed another postgraduate certificate program in a row, plus the first postgraduate qualification before, you can still apply for a 3-year work permit.

The 1-year Post-graduate certificate program is offered by almost all colleges and universities, and there are many majors to choose from. At the end of the article, we will list several popular schools and majors. If you are interested in applying, you can contact us.
