Program Description:

The Community Integration through Cooperative Education (CICE) program is designed for adults with developmental disabilities, acquired brain injuries, intellectual disabilities and other related learning challenges. If you've received an Ontario Secondary School Certificate of Completion, this program will give you the chance to attend college and progress toward your career goals.

Success will be a team effort. Learning Facilitators and an Employment Liaison will provide in-class assistance, weekly tutoring, and job coaching designed specifically for your learning strengths. Your courses will be personalized to meet your needs by modifying content, assignments and tests to focus on your strengths. You'll even have the technology you need to make learning accessible and engaging.

Once you select the career path you're interested in, you'll take eight courses in that program, six core CICE Seminar courses, three electives and complete three field placements throughout the two-year program. When you graduate, you'll receive an Ontario College Certificate in CICE and will have the hands-on experience required to pursue your desired career path.

Advantages:

The Community Integration Through Co-operative Education program (CICE) is a two-year, post-secondary, modified college certificate program designed for adults with developmental disabilities, acquired brain injuries, intellectual disabilities and other related learning challenges. The program provides students with an opportunity to enhance their academic skills through typical college classes, while developing vocational abilities through career related field placement opportunities.

Students choose an area of concentration from Fanshawe College’s many program offerings, based on seat availability. Students take a minimum of eight courses in a selected skill area (area of concentration) as well as six core CICE seminar courses, three electives and three field placements distributed throughout their two academic years. Upon completion of the program, a student receives an Ontario College Certificate in CICE from Fanshawe College. They will have field experience in an area of interest that may assist them in locating employment in that vocational field upon graduating.

A team of Learning Facilitators and an Employment Liaison provide students with in-class assistance, weekly tutoring outside the classroom and job coaching. Learning Facilitators are responsible for designing and implementing any modifications or accommodations in course work that students may need based on their individual challenges. Examples of modifications include changing the level of learning by adjusting the course learning outcomes and tailoring assignments and tests to meet individual needs. Accommodations depend on the student’s abilities and generally include note taking, scribing, extended test times and other related supports both inside and outside the classroom.

The CICE program offers students with learning challenges the opportunity to complete a college program that is modified to fit their individual academic abilities.

Career

The graduates of the CICE program will be qualified for a variety of entry-level positions depending on their area of interest. For example:

  • A student who has focused on the Hospitality and      Tourism programs may become a kitchen assistant or work at a hotel or      resort in a support role.

  • A student who has taken courses in Office      Administration may become a secretarial assistant, a file clerk, a mail      room attendant, data entry clerk or purchasing department aid.

  • A student who has taken courses in Early Childhood      Education may become a day care aid or nursery school classroom aid.

Overall, the possibilities for employment are only limited by the creativity of the person seeking the employment. Students of the CICE program can seek out many unique vocational opportunities with their newly acquired skills and field placement experience in the area that interests them.
