Program Description:

Learning how to provide professional and specialized dental care to patients in need is what Fanshawe's Dental Assisting (Levels I and II) program is all about. If you're ready to start a respected, secure and valuable career in the dental health field, there's no better way to get the ball rolling than Fanshawe.

In less than 10 months you'll become a professional Dental Assistant with a career almost guaranteed. You'll gain amazing experience, working chairside with dental students at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario. Plus, you'll complete a two-week work placement at a local dentist office. When you graduate, you'll be prepared to successfully complete the National Dental Assisting Examination Board (NDAEB) Exam in order to practice as a Level II Dental Assistant. You'll also be eligible for certification with the Ontario Dental Nurses and Assistants Association (ODAA) and the Canadian Dental Assistants Association CDAA.

Your new skills will be dynamic, and allow you to explore diverse career options in a clinic, in education, health promotion, business administration or as a laboratory assistant. Your career options will be waiting, with 95% of graduates from the program finding work in the field.

 

Advantages:

The Dental Assisting (Levels I and II) program will prepare a student to be an entry-level practitioner, capable of working interdependently and collaboratively with health professionals in a variety of practice settings. The graduate will be able to assume a variety of roles including clinical, education, health promotion, business administration and laboratory assistant, consistent with national and provincial standards and the Regulated Health Professions Act.

 

Admission Requirement:

OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U),
University/College (M), or Open (O) stream WITH:
- Any Grade 12 English (C) or (U)
- Mathematics ONE OF:
      - Grade 11 Mathematics (U) or (M) 
      - Grade 12 Mathematics (C) or (U)
- Grade 11 or Grade 12 Biology (C) or (U)
- Grade 11 or Grade 12 Chemistry (C) or (U)
  (Note: minimum final grade required for each course is 65)
OR
Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE) WITH:
- Communications
- Core Mathematics
- Biology
- Chemistry
  (Note: minimum final grade required for each course is 65)
OR
General Arts and Science Ontario College Certificate AND:
- minimum final grade of 'C+' or 65 in the required courses stated above
OR
Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) WITH:
-  The combined Language Arts - Reading AND Language Arts - Writing test results having a minimum average Standard Score of 520 AND:
-  Mathematics ONE OF:
        - Grade 11 Mathematics (U) or (M)
        - Grade 12 Mathematics (C) or (U)
-  Grade 11 or Grade 12 Biology (C) or (U)
-  Grade 11 or Grade 12 Chemistry (C) or (U)

Career

The graduate, upon certification, is qualified to assume a position as a Level II dental assistant in a private dental practice, a dental clinic or a health unit or agency.
