Program Description:

The line between life and death in an emergency situation is often drawn by the quality of communication between first responders and those in need. If working in the fast-paced and vitally important world of emergency communications excites you, the Emergency Telecommunications program will fast-track you toward career satisfaction. There isn't a more important career option than one making the world a safer place.

In this 15-week intensive program, you'll study emergency theory, communication techniques, and medical terminology. You'll examine issues surrounding pre-hospital care and how to effectively manage emergency calls. You'll be trained to be the link between the person in distress, and the help they need. As well, you'll also take part in a field experience, where you will observe the profession in action.

You'll also have have the opportunity to use real world, state of the art software, such as Intergraph® CAD 9.2. Cutting-edge technology for a vital and respected career.

When you graduate, your specialized skills will be needed in the police, fire or emergency medical sectors. Or, in large institutions, transport companies and security firms where communication skills are highly valued.

Individuals who lack the necessary prerequisites for this program or those who would like to enhance their preparation prior to pursuing a Public Safety career are encouraged to consider applying to the Public Safety Fundamentals program. Public Safety Fundamentals is designed to set you up for success and offers an excellent pathway to the numerous career programs in the School of Public Safety.

 

Advantages:

This intensive 15-week Ontario College Certificate program is designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge and specialized communication skills required to work in the highly demanding and unpredictable position of an emergency telecommunicator. Graduates who have the ability to successfully multitask in high stress situations while processing and dispatching calls will be prepared for employment opportunities in the fields of Police, Fire or Emergency Medical Services. Strong keyboarding, spelling skills and geographical knowledge are an expected professional standard. Students will have the opportunity to use real world, state of the art software, i.e., Intergraph® CAD 9.2.

 

Admission Requirement:

OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U), 
University/College (M), or Open (O) stream WITH: 
- Any Grade 12 English (C) or (U) 
  (Note: minimum final grade required is 65) 
OR
Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE) WITH: 
- Communications 
  (Note: minimum final grade required is 65) 
OR 
Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) WITH: 
- The combined Language Arts - Reading AND Language Arts - Writing test results having a minimum average Standard Score of 520 
OR
Mature Applicant with standing in the required course and grade stated above

Career

This program provides the academic and practical skills that graduates need to enter this dynamic career. The industry recognizes the College's training as employer's training time is reduced. Graduates are employed as police, fire and ambulance dispatchers. Additional career opportunities exist within industries utilizing telecommunications (e.g., large institutions, transportation industry and security firms).
