Program Description:
We shape the natural world, and the natural world shapes us. If you're intrigued by leaving a living mark on the world that will endure through generations. Or, if you have a green thumb that you're looking to put to work in a dynamic career, the Landscape Design program will give you the skills necessary to plant the seeds of your future goals.
You'll learn how to survey and analyze planting sites, select the vegetation and landscape materials, and plan the location of structures, roads, pathways, trees, shrubs, flower beds and decorative features. You'll also learn about design theory, plant identification, drafting, landscape and building materials and technologies. You'll get plenty of experience using industry software to create detailed site plans, and you'll even have the 100-acre Fanshawe campus to use as your canvas.
You'll also get great hands-on experience through two paid co-op work terms, plus, you'll have the opportunity for academic based international experiences and study in some the world's most historic cities..
When you graduate, you'll have a huge job market to choose from, including residential and commercial property developers, municipalities, landscape architects, design-build firms, nurseries or start your own landscape consultant business.
Advantages:
Landscape Design is a three-year co-operative program of study providing training in the design of many types of landscape areas, with emphasis on residential landscape design as well as experience with commercial and institutional sites. A variety of skills in areas such as drafting, computer-aided design, three dimensional modeling, design illustration and visualization are combined with the knowledge of design theory, plant and hard materials, landscape construction and new technologies to provide students with the skills necessary to source employment in the expanding field of landscape design.
Qualifying graduates of the Landscape Design program, have the option to receive advanced standing into a related Honours Bachelor's Degree in the Environmental Design and Planning program at Fanshawe College as well as the Landscape Architecture program at the University of Guelph where they may continue their studies.
Admission Requirement:
OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U),
University/College (M), or Open (O) stream WITH:
- Any Grade 12 English (C) or (U)
- Any Grade 11 or Grade 12 Mathematics (C), (U), or (M)
OR
Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE)
OR
Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) AND:
- Any Grade 11 or Grade 12 Mathematics (C), (U), or (M)
OR
Mature Applicant with standing in the required courses stated above
