Program Description:

Get a step up on the competition by choosing the Co-op stream of the Law Clerk program. Work on real cases, with real lawyers, in real firms, all while still studying. In many ways, the law field is the most crucial institution in the country. If being a part of this prestigious career intrigues you, Fanshawe's Law Clerk (Co-op) program will provide vital access to the dynamic training needed to be a proud serving member of the law field.

You'll begin the program by developing a solid foundation in business law combined with practical law clerk training that will give you diverse skills for diverse career options. You'll also study civil litigation, corporate commercial, debtor and creditor rights, real estate, landlord and tenant, estate administration, and family law.

When you graduate, you'll have learned everything you need to start your career off right, including intensive training with leading software and online applications used by law firms and legal departments in Canada. And, because you've chosen the Co-op stream, you'll work with real legal teams, on real cases, graduating a step ahead.

Individuals who lack the necessary prerequisites for this program or those who would like to enhance their preparation prior to pursuing a Public Safety career are encouraged to consider applying to the Public Safety Fundamentals program. Public Safety Fundamentals is designed to set you up for success and offers an excellent pathway to the numerous career programs in the School of Public Safety.

 

Advantages:
Fanshawe College's Law Clerk (Co-op) program is designed to provide students with a solid grounding in legal principles combined with the practical law clerk training that students will need to enter the diverse, fast-paced modern field of law. As a graduate of the Law Clerk program you will work as part of a team in law firms, corporate legal departments, financial institutions, insurance companies, legal technology providers, title insurance companies, Federal, Provincial and Municipal Governments or in any other capacity where a legal environment exists. Depending upon your choice of career path, you could find yourself preparing motion records and trial documentation, interviewing witnesses, arranging trial dates and adjournments, drafting corporate/commercial documentation, completing Family Law Act financial statements, administering estates, negotiating leases, administering contracts, completing legal research, searching titles or processing real estate transactions. At Fanshawe College you will learn about many areas of Canadian law including civil litigation, corporate/commercial, debtor and creditor rights, real estate, landlord and tenant, estate administration, family law and contracts. You will refine your communication and information processing skills as you learn how to research, analyze and write in the legal environment. You will develop an ability to work in a variety of leading-edge legal software applications and online commercial legal databases and services.

 

Admission Requirement:

OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U), 
University/College (M), or Open (O) stream WITH: 
- Any Grade 12 English (C) or (U)
- Mathematics ONE OF:
    -Grade 11 Mathematics (C), (U), or (M)
    -Grade 12 Mathematics (C) or (U)
(Note: minimum final grade required for each course is 65)
OR
Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE) WITH:
    -Communications
    -Core Mathematics

Public Safety Fundamentals Ontario College Certificate AND:
-Minimum final grade of 'C+' or 65 in the required courses stated above

Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) WITH:
    -The combined Language Arts - Reading AND Language Arts - Writing test results having a minimum average Standard Score of 520 AND:
