Program Description:

If putting your career goals in over-drive is something that excites you, and if you'd like to gain real-world experience while earning real-world cash, the Motive Power Technician (Automotive) – Apprentice program is for you.

This seventy-six week program is comprised of an initial thirty week in-school segment followed by sixteen weeks of co-operative work experience and concludes with another thirty week in-school segment. You'll graduate with cutting-edge technical, organizational, interpersonal, administrative and managerial skills required for the automotive service industry. As well, you'll all there is to know about internal combustion spark ignition engines, power trains and related modern vehicle systems. You'll also learn to communicate effectively, diagnose and solve problems logically, and to undertake responsible work tasks with a minimum of supervision.

When you graduate, you'll not only receive an Ontario College Diploma, but you'll also be granted credit for all of the apprenticeship in-school instruction required for the associated trades certification. And, you might get favourable status if you wish to apply for our alternative Motive Power Technician (Diesel) Diploma program - this is a program with a lot of horsepower.

 

Advantages:
The Motive Power Technician (Automotive) - Apprentice program amalgamates the Ontario College Diploma requirements, four months of practical, on-the-job co-operative training at an automotive service facility and the entire Ontario Apprenticeship Automotive Service Technician in-school curriculum.  Students are registered as an apprentice when they enter their work term and as a post-secondary student concurrently and pursue both diploma courses and apprenticeship in-school training in the Automotive Service Technician trade.

The Motive Power Technician (Automotive) - Apprentice program is designed to develop graduates with essential advanced technical, organizational, interpersonal, administrative and managerial skills required for the automotive service industry as well as providing progressive and comprehensive learning experiences on internal combustion spark ignition engines, power trains and related modern vehicle systems.  Students will learn to communicate effectively, diagnose and solve problems logically and to undertake responsible work tasks with a minimum of supervision.

Upon completion of all program requirements, graduates not only receive an Ontario College Diploma, but will also be granted credit for all of the apprenticeship in-school instruction required for the associated trades certification.

Graduates may also be in a favourable status if they wish to apply for our alternative Motive Power Technician (Diesel) Diploma program.  Credit for those courses that bridge our diploma programs will be granted; therefore, significantly reducing the requirements for this second Ontario College Diploma.

Career
Graduates are well positioned to enter the workplace in the Automotive Service Technician trade as they have also completed the in-school training requirements for that particular trade.
Graduates may also find employment opportunities with motive power equipment manufacturers and dealers, oil companies, industrial, commercial and passenger vehicle manufacturers and dealers in servicing, parts, warranty claims, merchandising sales and insurance estimating.
