This is the only program of its kind in Ontario and includes a four-month, paid apprenticeship so you can practice your trade hands-on, with real machines. You'll get intensive training in maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing heavy duty vehicles, including highway tractors, buses and off-road construction equipment. You'll learn everything you need to know about internal combustion compression ignition engines, power trains and related modern heavy duty systems. You'll also learn to communicate effectively, diagnose and solve problems logically and undertake responsible work tasks with minimum supervision.
When you graduate, you'll have earned an Ontario College Diploma AND completed all the in-school apprenticeship training required for a successful career in an industry with many job opportunities.
Advantages:
The Motive Power Technician (Diesel) - Apprentice program amalgamates the Ontario College Diploma requirements, four months of practical, on-the-job co-operative training at a truck and coach service facility and the entire Ontario Apprenticeship Truck and Coach Service Technician in-school curriculum. Students are registered as an apprentice when they enter their work term and as a post-secondary student concurrently and pursue both diploma courses and apprenticeship in-school training in the Truck and Coach Service Technician trade.
This seventy-six week program is comprised of an initial thirty week in-school segment followed by sixteen weeks of co-operative work experience and concludes with another thrity week in-school segment.
The Motive Power Technician (Diesel) - Apprentice program is designed to develop graduates with essential advanced technical, organizational, interpersonal, administrative and managerial skills required for the heavy duty service industry as well as providing progressive and comprehensive learning experiences on internal combustion compression ignition engines, power trains and related modern heavy duty systems. Students will learn to communicate effectively, diagnose and solve problems logically and to undertake responsible work tasks with a minimum of supervision.
Upon completion of all program requirements, graduates not only receive an Ontario College Diploma, but will also be granted credit for all of the apprenticeship in-school instruction required for the associated trade certification.
Graduates may also be in a favourable status if they wish to apply for our alternative Motive Power Technician (Automotive) Diploma program.
