Program Description:

The Fitness and Health Promotion program is for students interested in learning about the science and practice of implementing useful programs of physical fitness and health for all ages and stages of development. By designing and delivering meaningful, age-relevant physical activity programs, graduates will contribute to the health of the "well" population and help people improve their performance in their careers and personal lives. Graduates will be prepared for front line direct-client work with individuals of varying ages and in various settings. This program provides a broad study of the principles and methods of fitness and health provision to children and youth cohorts where few others have done so. Experiental learning through field placement is at the core of this program. This program takes a holistic approach to intervention with each of targeted cohorts addressing such issues as client context and family support.

You will receive training and practical experience in the development of coaching and fitness promotion skills related to the design and delivery of age-relevant programs of physical activity and wellness. You will learn how to coach, train and motivate clients of all ages and stages of development and how to interact effectively with clients, parents, caregivers and allied health professionals. You will become a certified coach and be recognized as a trained professional, able to deliver programs to develop physical literacy to children and youth in a variety of settings as well as for adults and seniors who wish to remain active for life.

Upon graduation from this program, students would be qualified to seek employment as instructors within organizations and providers that wish to maintain or grow existing successful fitness and lifestyle management programs or initiate new meaningful programs for children and youth. They would also be qualified to work in adult fitness environments as well as senior centres, delivering appropriate programs for fitness and health promotion to the adult population.
