Program Description:
Established as Canada’s first film school in 1969, York's Department of Cinema & Media Arts is internationally recognized as one of the premier centres for film production, screenwriting and studies in film theory and history. We remain the foremost in the country with teaching faculty made up of award-winning filmmakers and critically acclaimed and widely published scholars, a finely honed curriculum and up to date facilities, housed in the largest teaching complex of its kind in Canada. Our curriculum embraces diversity and social justice, attracting students from all over the country as well as from around the world.
Get hands-on professional training in digital cinematography, editing, sound, as well as directing and production management from award-winning filmmakers in our Production BFA program. Learn the art and craft of moving-image storytelling in Canada’s only Screenwriting BFA program. Explore and engage critically with Canadian and world cinema, documentary and alternative film in our Cinema & Media Studies BA program. Draw on our outstanding digital production facilities, extensive technical support, industry partner grants, field placements, public screenings and stellar guest speakers to chart your path to career success.
York offers degree programs in Cinema & Media Arts leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA).
· Concentrating in hands-on experiential studio work (production or screenwriting) leads to a BFA in Production & Screenwriting.
· Concentrating in history, theory and criticism leads to a BA in Cinema & Media Studies.
