The ESL course at Balmoral High School provides guidance to non-native English speaking students. The goal of this course is to help students adapt to regular English courses. Students with a special English course will participate in the English language proficiency test of the Canadian language benchmark as soon as they enter school, and will be divided into four language level stages according to their test scores. They will participate in individual-oriented courses to meet individual needs.

Phase one

Students need to train all aspects of English ability. Students will participate in ESL programs and, if possible, attend regular classroom courses. ESL teachers will provide students with targeted support. Students will also be assisted by ESL assistants in certain classes.

Phase two

Students have increased their confidence in all aspects of their English ability, but they still have certain difficulties in listening, reading comprehension and writing. Students take ESL courses and, if possible, students participate in regular subjects with the necessary help. Students will receive special guidance from ESL teachers and will be assisted by ESL assistants in certain classes.

Stage three

Students gradually adapt to reading and speaking in English, but they need to further develop all aspects of English skills to enter the next stage of learning. Students participate in all subjects with the necessary help. Students will receive special guidance from ESL teachers and teaching assistants.

Phase four

Students are basically fluent in English and basically have no wrong expression in English and can adapt to regular courses. Students receive individual instructions according to their own needs. ESL teachers and teaching assistants will still give extra help.

English Learning Course (ELL)

High school students (grades 9-12) with English proficiency in the third and fourth stages participate in the English Language Learning Program (ELL). Depending on the grade level, teaching may include TOEFL tutoring. Students participate in all subjects with the necessary help. ESL teachers will give students guidance that suits their personal circumstances, and ESL assistants will give extra help. It is very important that for most international students whose English is a second language, the TOEFL score is a necessary condition for university admission. According to ESL teacher's recommendation, students can earn credits.

General English courses

In order to adapt to the regular courses, the TOEFL score of the students must reach 550, and the average score of each subject should reach more than 70%. The above conditions must be met before June 30th. All admissions for the next school year will be decided by June 30th. Students do not accept ESL or ELL counseling.
