ESL Gateway Program Entrance Requirements
A high school diploma from their home country.
The equivalent of 4.0 on the IELTS score. Students without an IELTS score will be tested using the Oxford Online Placement Test. Toronto Film School ESL Gateway Program covers ranges between 4.0 IELTS and 5.5 IELTS.
Placement
Based on the results of the Oxford Online Placement Test, students are tentatively placed in Level 1, Level 2 or Level 3 of the ESL Gateway Program. Students are tested again upon arrival to Canada and may be placed up or down a level depending on the results of the in-person test.
Please note:
If you do not have an English test score or would like to improve your English at other ESL schools, please see a list of TFS approved language schools below, along with a standard list of recognized language proficiency tests and minimum scores.
If you have successfully studied for three years in an English speaking country, you do not need to submit ESL test results.
If you have studied in English for at least two years at a recognized college or have successfully completed one year of study at a recognized university or a one-year post graduate certificate at a recognized college, you do not need to submit ESL test results.

Tuition fees do not include books, expendable supplies, equipment and resources, and may increase up to 6% annually. There are a variety of payment options available to new students. As an international student, you can cancel a contract with Toronto Film School or withdraw from a program for any reason with written notice.
If you are unable to obtain a student visa to enter Canada, you will be entitled to a refund (as long as you give us written notification before half of the program is over).
To become a student at Toronto Film School’s Diploma programs, you must have a high school diploma or its equivalent, be proficient in English, and meet program specific admission requirements:
High school (or the equivalent) graduates must submit original or notarized transcripts. If your high school transcripts are not in English, you will be asked to submit translated transcripts.
Transfer students from other universities or post-secondary institutions must submit original or notarized transcripts. If your post-secondary transcripts are not in English, you will be asked to submit translated transcripts. To transfer your credits from another university or post-secondary institution, please submit course descriptions (translated, if not in English), in addition to your high school and post-secondary transcripts.
We may need to determine the Canadian equivalency of your high school or post-secondary credits through an outside evaluation service. Approved evaluation services include: Ontario Comparative Education Assessment Service, International Credential Assessment Service of Canada (ICAS of Canada), World Education Services (WES Canada).
If your native language is not English, you will need to submit documentation for an IELTS 5.5 or equivalent for entry into most academic programs. If you do not have any English test score and/or need to improve your English skills, you will need to complete a full-time English Language program at Toronto Film School or an approved ESL training school, before starting your TFS diploma program.
HOME STAY OPPORTUNITIES
If you would prefer to stay with a host family, you might consider the option of Home Stay. This option provides a family environment to enjoy the comforts of a home and hosts that can answer your questions and provide insight into Toronto and Canadian life. In addition, you may be staying with other International Students who you can connect with! Home Stay provides access to the living areas in the house, as well as television, laundry and Internet. Fees vary, (depending on the meal plan and the Home Stay company), but costs are approximately $750/ month.
