Program Description:

Anthropology is the study of different societies around the world — their origins, development and cultural similarities and differences. The goal of anthropology is to advance knowledge of who and what we are, how we came to be and where we might be going in the future.

The Anthropology program focuses on the theories and methods of anthropology to explore how people in the world are subjected to, participate in and contest the processes of living in a world that is interconnected by new and powerful economic, cultural and technological forces.

We house one of the largest socio-cultural anthropology departments in Canada, offering comprehensive and engaging programs of study.

Our students think critically and productively about how concepts such as class, race, gender and ethnic identities are produced and expressed in shifting local and global contexts of power. These themes are explored in a wide variety of courses and engage such topics as:

· development and the environment

· media and popular culture

· health

· illness and disability

· gender and sexualities

· tourism

· religion and science

· diasporic communities and displaced peoples

· violence and conflict

· the colonial process

Other courses focus on processes of change in the prehistoric and historic past. Our overall goal is to prepare you to ask questions about contemporary, past and future social life and to provide you with the critical analytic tools to understand our place in the social and cultural diversity of the world, past and present.

Take courses that engage in topics such as development and the environment in local and global contexts; media and popular culture; health, illness and disability; gender and sexualities; violence and conflict; and religious movements.

Study with professors who have worked with national and international organizations including the Canadian Human Rights Commission and the World Health Organization.

Ielts

YUBridge Program:

Students accepted into the YUBridge program receive a conditional offer of acceptance to York University. In eight months, you’ll be speaking and writing at an IELTS 6.5 level — the minimum requirement for full admission. While improving your IELTS level, you will also take one 3-credit course per semester. By the end of the first semester, you may be eligible to enrol in two 3-credit courses in your second semester, meaning that you could attain 9 credits of your undergraduate degree by the end of the program.

Eligibility requirements:

All applicants must achieve an 80% GPA in high school or equivalent and one of the following:

· TOEFL iBT 64, with a minimum of 16 in Writing

· TOEFL CBT 180 OR IELTS: 5.0 overall, with a minimum of 5.0 in Writing

· “Suitable” on a York University English Language Institute (YUELI) Proficiency Test, held regularly in cities around the world

· Successful completion of the York University English Language Institute Academic Program — Level AP5

What's in Residence for You?

· Access: You are in the centre of everything York has to offer. Close to your classes, the gym, libraries and — if you choose to work on campus — your job!

· Well-planned meals: You can choose from a variety of meal plans that suit your eating needs and habits. Menu options include halal, kosher and vegetarian.

· Residence support staff: Your Residence Life Coordinators and a team of Dons (senior-student mentors) are there to orient and guide you, making your residence stay a smooth one.

Who you’ll live with:

Most buildings offer traditional dormitory style with standard bedrooms and shared washrooms and lounges. All buildings are co-ed, though same-gender floors and washrooms are available. The standard single dormitory-style room is approximately 8.5 by 12.5 feet (106 square feet). The Keele Campus also has some suite-style residences that include ensuite kitchens and bathrooms, which are a preferred option for upper-year students who want to live in smaller groups and share amenities. You can select your own roommate on your application or have one selected for you through a compatibility questionnaire.

Applying to Residence:

Residence is guaranteed to first-year students admitted directly from a full-time secondary-school program who apply by the deadline. First-year students admitted with an average of 90 per cent or higher are also guaranteed a single room if requested by the deadline. You must apply by June 1 to secure your guarantee for residence.
