Program Description:
Emergency Management is an exciting and rapidly expanding profession domestically and internationally. Recent events, including SARS, the 2003 power outage, and the Walkerton water disaster, illustrated the potential for serious disruption in our everyday lives. These incidents also heightened awareness of the importance of Emergency Management, which includes working to prevent or mitigate the impact of potential challenges as well as responding to current emergencies. Emergency managers require strong analytical, communication, and integrative skills which help them establish a meaningful dialogue with experts in a wide range of fields and make sense of the complex information they provide.
This certificate has been designed in close consultation with key professional organizations to address core skills and knowledge, and the balance between research, theory and practice required in this vitally important field. Through lectures, case studies and class discussions, students will develop:
· An understanding of the Emergency Response Cycle including hazard identification, risk analysis, risk evaluation and mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.
· The ability to read, interpret, prepare and implement emergency plans, policies and procedures.
· The ability to work as a member of a team while also providing effective leadership
