Program Description:

In this program, you will learn from intensive classroom instruction in theoretical and nursing practice. You'll also gain a solid foundation in human anatomy and physiology, and complementary subjects in general education, as well as a minimum of 1,700 hours of clinical experience.

Your subjects will include nursing theory, the nurse as professional person, nursing practice, professional issues, human anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, psychology and General Education.

Experience in the nursing practice laboratory and in several hospital and community settings is integral to the course of study.

To improve your likelihood of success while studying in BSCN, we recommend limiting employment to less than eight hours per week.


Important Information:

Seneca College offers the Nursing program in collaboration with York University. Successfully complete the first two years (four semesters) of this program and you will be eligible to continue on to York University to complete two additional years leading to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Honours) Degree. You'll be required to meet York University admission requirements. The Collaborative BScN program is a four-year full-time program. Students normally must complete this program within six (6) calendar years (18 semesters) from the time of admission.


Program Requirements:

All students in a York University Honours program must maintain an overall (all courses) grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 (C+ or 65%). For students in the Honours BScN program there are three additional requirements for courses:

1.      A minimum grade of C+ (65%) for all professional (NUR/HAP/HDP) courses.

2.      A “SATISFACTORY” grade in the clinical component of all practicum courses.

3.      A minimum grade of C (60%) for all other courses (PSY/LSO).

In Years 1 and 2, your academic standing is evaluated at the end of each term. You will receive a transcript on Student Centre. It will contain a statement about whether or not you are eligible to continue in the BScN program.


Admission Requirements:

v  Program Eligibility:

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including six Grade 12 (U) or (M) courses with a minimum grade of 70% in each and a minimum overall average of 80%, or a mature applicant (21 years or older and has been out of high school for a minimum of two years). Mature applicants should disclose all previous postsecondary transcripts.

Required courses - minimum final grade of 70% in each:

·         English: Grade 12 ENG 4(U)

·         Mathematics: any Grade 12(U)

·         Biology: Grade 12 SBI 4(U)

·         Chemistry: Grade 12 SCH 4(U) or Physics: Grade 12 SPH 4(U)

 

v  University GPA Requirement:

·         Applicants who have completed at least four full courses or one year of full-time degree studies at an accredited university may be considered for admission. GPA requirements will be determined annually.

 

v  College GPA Requirement:

·         Applicants who have completed at least two full semesters or one year of full-time studies at an accredited college must have achieved the following GPA for admission consideration:

o   (B+/75% or equivalent).


BScN Language Proficiency:

You meet our language proficiency requirements if you have completed:

·         four full years of study in Canada in English or French at the secondary school level; OR

·         four full years at the secondary school level in English in a country where English is a primary language; OR

·         the equivalent of one full year of an accredited university degree program in English in a country where English is a primary language; OR

·         two full years of study in an accredited college diploma program in English in a country where English is a primary language.

If you do not meet the above criteria, you must complete an acceptable English language proficiency test and earn an appropriate score. Test results should be sent to ontariocolleges.ca.

·         York English Language Test (YELT) – Overall: 1-4

·         Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) – 573 (Paper), 230 (computer), 89 (IBT)

·         International English Language Testing Service (IELT) – Band 7

·         York University English Language Institute Intensive Program – Level 6 with distinction, honours or pass
