This year, on February 14, 2018, a massive gunfire took place at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, United States, killing 17 people and wounding 14 others. Among them, most of the casualties were students of the high school. However, only two and a half months passed in 2018, and 18 school shootings occurred in 2018 in the United States. On January 22, 2018, a 15-year-old girl was killed at a school cafeteria. January 23, 2018, two students were shot by a classmate. The U.S. shooting offenses have become even more serious and the voice of gun control is getting louder and louder.

Canada's gun control

Since the 1930s the need for mandatory registration of firearms, the firearms policy has become a topic for Canada. In the past few decades, government legislation has become more stringent on gunmen. Between 1995 and 2012, all firearms need to be registered. The registration of firearms, on the other hand, regulates restricted and prohibited firearms so as to facilitate the government's effective management and tracking of the registered firearms.

And Canada's gun control is not as chaotic as the United States, and each province and even every region has a different policy. Canada has a uniform national gun policy and divides firearms into non-restricted, restricted and prohibited categories.

But when a shootout happens on campus, how should students protect themselves?

First, in the case of a shootout, pay attention to the possible dangers of the environment in which it is located and find out the two nearest exits. If the gunman is in the vicinity, the first is to choose to run away and set up an escape route and plan in front of the runaway.

Followed by hiding, hiding in the area outside the gunmen's sight, blocking the entrance to the hideout and locking the door, muting the phone, threatening life threatening attack.

Thirdly, when law enforcement officers arrive at the scene, they should calmly follow the instructions, put down their belongings, raise their hands and fingers apart to avoid rapid movements to law enforcement officials, avoid pointing, screaming or shouting, and do not stop for enforcement while evacuating Staff for help or ask for directions.

Fourth, when calling the police, the police should explain the location of the current gunman, the number and description of the appearance of the gunman, the number and type of weapons held by the gunmen, the number of potential victims on the scene and so on, so that the police can take proper rescue actions.
