Provincial Health Insurance

BC: The Medical Service Plan (MSP) is a mandatory health insurance plan in BC and anyone who lives in BC for more than six months (including international students) joins the MSP and pays monthly benefits. MSP is responsible for basic medical care in Canada, including most doctor visits and hospitalization fees. The MSP will not take effect until the insured person enters Canada for three months, with most international students buying iMED in the first three months. Adults over the age of 19 are charged 75 Canadian dollars per month, under 19 years old do not need to pay any fees.


Alberta: Students (over the age of 18) with a 12-month student visa are covered by the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan free of charge from the provincial government, which exempts all medical fees, laboratory fees, and hospitalization Fees, students must register within three months after arrival.


Saskatchewan: Saskatchewan offers free medical insurance to international students, who need to apply within three months of arrival.


Manitoba: Manitoba students with a minimum of 6 months' student visa are covered by Manitoba Health Plan for free at Manitoba, where they can apply by either on-site or by mail. Insurance takes immediate effect on the day students enter Manitoba and international students can enjoy the same coverage as Manitoba residents.


Ontario: International students studying in Ontario need to purchase the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). Most Ontario and tertiary colleges are participating in the UHIP program, a joint venture of Sunlife, where UHIP insurance must be purchased. A few other schools choose a group insurance plan from other companies, but they all have to buy it.


Québec: Québec's international students can purchase health insurance from participating schools, some automatically join programs at start-up, others require students to buy, and some allow students to buy insurance from a commercial company, specifically consult the school in attendance.


NB Province: Starting September 2017, international students enrolled in full-time at the school can apply for free insurance under the New Brunswick Medicare program.


Nova Scotia Province: International students have free access to the provincial government's Nova Scotia Health Care Insurance (MSI) after staying in NS for 13 months. Before joining the program, students may join other commercial insurance schemes. For details, please consult the school in attendance.


Prince Edward Island: International students are not covered by the provincial health insurance plan. They need to buy compulsory health insurance from the school. For more information, please contact your local school.


Newfoundland: Students with a 12-month study visa and full-time tertiary enrollment in Newfoundland can apply to the provincial government's Medical Care Plan (MCP) and benefit from the program for free.


General medical treatment

Common diseases such as colds, allergies, stomach upset and so on, can be in the clinic or family doctor for medical treatment. Since Canada's hospitals are queuing up for treatment according to the severity of their illness, going to the hospital may have to discharge most of their team for a long time if the condition is not serious. If clinic doctors diagnose that there are no major problems, they will issue appropriate medical orders. If the doctor diagnoses any major problems, they will also arrange for examination or referral to other specialists for further diagnosis. Buy medicine

Insurance reimbursement

You are usually treated in a clinic or a hospital. All costs are covered by the insurance plan. You only need to present your health insurance card or health card before your visit, at no charge. If you forget to bring the insurance information and pay a fee, you can apply for reimbursement later. At the same time, most schools will require students to purchase additional health insurance, insurance coverage extended to some dentist costs, prescription drug costs, some optometry costs, massage treatment costs.
