According to the report on the growth of international students in the past five years (GROWTH TRENDS: THE PAST FIVE YEARS) released by ICEF Insights magazine 2019, between 2014 and 2018, the world ’s major study destinations have recorded an increase in the number of foreign students enrolled. But some of these destinations are growing faster than others.


The United States still recruits the most international students, but as other countries become more competitive, their market share is declining.

Compared with 2014, the United States increased 208,740 international students in 2018, a growth rate of 24%. However, the increase in the number of students in Canada, Japan, and Australia over the past five years is particularly noticeable.


The graph shows the number of international students in each country in 2018. It can be seen that the United States is still the first with a total of 1,094,790. There are 693,750 people in Australia in the second place and 586,909 people in the UK in the third place. Canada is closely followed by 572,415 international students.


But in terms of growth rate, Canada is the leader. It added 224,245 international students in 2018, a 73% increase from 2014. The main source of increase students is in order of India, China, Vietnam, Iran, Brazil.


Japan added 114,825 international students in 2018, a 62% increase from 2014. The main source of increase of students is Vietnam, China, Nepal, Taiwan in order. 


Australia added 240,800 international students in 2018, a 53% increase from 2014. The main sources of additional students are China, India, Nepal, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. 


As for China, it added 115,130 international students in 2018, a 31% increase from 2014. Russia added 71,705 international students in 2018, a 30% increase from 2014.
