According to information obtained by Radio Canada, work experience will be at the core of this new reform of the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ).

According to a report by Radio Canada on May 19, last fall, the reform proposed by Simon Jolin-Barrette, director of the Department of Immigration of Quebec, was strongly criticized by the business and education communities. Only people in certain fields of study, training and work are eligible to apply for PEQ, which dissatisfies universities, CEGEP and employer representatives.

To date, PEQ allows all temporary foreign workers and international graduate students who have lived in the province to apply, without specifying their areas of study, training or work. Nevertheless, mastering French is still essential.
Since its creation in 2010, PEQ has been very popular and the number of beneficiaries has been increasing. For example, last year, PEQ accepted nearly 15,000 foreign students and laborers.

Quebec now intends to limit the qualifications of PEQ applicants, as already mentioned in the consultation document released in February. In the latter, the growing popularity of PEQ is mentioned, reducing the demand for skilled workers in other categories. It writes that Quebec now needs more than ever to encourage workers who are more in line with the needs of the labor market to come. To this end, the government will require international students to have work experience in certain fields before applying for PEQ.

According to Radio Canada, applicants may need one to two years of work experience before applying for immigration. For example, vocational learning (DEP) graduates need two years of experience, and those who have gone to college will need one year of experience. Regarding temporary workers, one year of work experience is currently required. It will now require a longer duration, which may last three years.

However, according to what Simon Jolin-Barrette, the director of the Simon Jolin-Barrette group, introduced to business representatives in recent weeks, not all workers can apply for PEQ.

According to some sources, Quebec will also announce a clause. Foreign students and workers already in Quebec will not be directly affected by this reform.

What is PEQ immigration

PEQ is the abbreviation of Québec experience program, which translates into Chinese as Québec experience immigration. The project came into effect on February 14, 2010. In order to retain these talents more effectively, Quebec decided to solve the immigration problem so that professional and technical personnel can stay and work and live in Quebec more down-to-earth, thereby promoting local development. Eligible applicants can get the Quebec selection certificate (Québec selection certificate) within three weeks. After that, as long as they pass the medical examination and non-criminal background check, they can usually obtain Canadian permanent residents within one year to one and a half years Maple leaf card.
